Keystage 2 - Gardens - Design a Mughal garden

Mughal gardens symbolised the enclosed and peaceful Gardens of Paradise referred to in the Koran. This activity encourages you to think about the layout of Mughal gardens and what features were important.
  

Hands on activity

Bradford in the north of England has its very own Mughal garden. Have a look.

Now, take a rectangular piece of paper on which to design your Mughal garden.
Use pencils and rulers to draw the symmetrical layout of your garden.

You will need to deside on a layout.
Mughal gardens often have a formal, symmetrical designs. If the area was hilly, terraces were constructed. Paths were usually raised above ground level.

Water features
Mughal gardens usually have water features such as a channel or pool. Typically, two water channels cross each other, dividing the garden into four quarters. A central pool or pavilion marks the centre of the garden. Water is also used in cascades and fountains which makes the air cool.

Which plants are you going to put into it?
Scented flowers were planted in symmetrical beds and avenues of trees often lined paths. Shade trees created cool resting areas.
